ML 4.0 California scientists have come out and stated that there is a 99.7% chance that a major earthquake will strike the state in the next 30 years. There is a 63% chance that the Bay Area will be hit with a magnitude 6.7 or greater earthquake by that year. Seismologists looked at data from historical records, fault line locations, among other things to predict these numbers. The lead author of the report, Ned Field stated that this guarantees a major earthquake will take place. The last time California was hit with an earthquake of this magnitude was in 1994 when 70 people died, 9,000 were injured, and $25 billion in damages were assessed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COMMENT FROM R.KAREL: Congratulations.... You are fantastic.... I cannot believe that seismologists can make a such a ridiculous prediction. "Seismologists looked at data from historical records, fault line locations, among other things to predict these numbers." Which things ? Fault lines change every day, how can you follow and examine the new fault lines ? Did you find every single fault line ? When you look the history, which kind of calculation you do to find out the future ? Don't you think what you do is a same to check last 10 years lottery numbers to guess next week lottery numbers? Because of solar winds, our earth changes daily... God sake, open your eyes.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scientists with the first statewide temblor forecast on Monday estimated there's a 99.7 percent chance that a magnitude-6.7 quake or larger will strike the state in the next 30 years. The odds of such an event are higher in Southern California than in the north.
New estimates show one or more potentially damaging earthquakes will shake California by 2037, and chances are highest it will break along the fault line that stretches through the Coachella Valley. The most likely source is the Southern San Andreas Fault, which runs from about the Banning Pass to the Salton Sea. Of all the faults in the state, it is most primed to break - with a 59 percent chance of rupturing with a large quake in the next 30 years. The Southern California Earthquake Center teamed with the U.S. Geological Survey and the California Geological Survey for the study. "It's not just (the Coachella Valley's) proximity to the fault, which is a big issue. It's the type of soil you're sitting on. It is soft sand. It can amplify the shaking and make it worse." Experts have described the southern part of the San Andreas fault line as "10 months pregnant." The section hasn't had a major quake in more than 300 years. "You have to realize this is a very long pregnancy, and it is way overdue," Southern California Earthquake Center director Tom Jordan said. Earthquake experts in May will release another study showing the impact of a massive quake that starts in the Salton Sea, rumbles through the Coachella Valley and into the high desert. They're planning a four-day statewide exercise in November to practice responding to such a scenario. Study
a wake-up call The 1994 Northridge earthquake under Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley was magnitude-6.7. It killed 72 people, injured more than 9,000 and caused $25 billion in damage in the metropolitan area. A Northridge-size shock in a major urban center would be more devastating than one in a sparsely populated area. The far stronger 7.1 Hector quake that struck the Mojave Desert 130 miles east of Los Angeles in 1999 derailed a passenger train but caused only a few injuries and no deaths. Nonetheless, scientists say the analysis should be a wake-up call for residents to ready for a natural disaster. "We are still an earthquake country," said Peter Lent, deputy director for the Riverside County Office of Emergency Services. "We're preparing like the big one could happen tomorrow." The American Red Cross and emergency crews have plans to create massive shelters, but officials say residents should be prepared to survive on their own for three to seven days. "When the infrastructure is impacted, people might not be able to get to them right away," said Lois Beckman, development officer for Riverside County's American Red Cross. Unknown
faults studied The new predictions also reflect geologists' better understanding about surprise earthquakes from previously unknown faults. Those include the hidden blind-thrust fault system that triggered the Northridge quake and other new faults discovered after quakes at Landers, Big Bear Lake and in the high desert, near Twentynine Palms. California is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. More than 300 faults crisscross the state, which sits atop two of the Earth's major tectonic plates, the Pacific and North American plates. About 10,000 quakes rattle Southern California each year, although most of them are too small to be felt. Knowing the likelihood of a strong earthquake is the first step in allowing scientists to draw up hazard maps that show the potential severity of ground shaking in an area. The information also can help with updating building codes and emergency plans and setting earthquake insurance rates. The latest analysis is the first comprehensive effort by the USGS, Southern California Earthquake Center and California Geological Survey to calculate earthquake probabilities for the entire state using newly available data. Previous quake probabilities focused on specific regions and used various methodologies that made it difficult to compare. "It's near certainty that we are going to have a potentially damaging earthquake somewhere in the (Riverside County) region in the next 30 years," said Ned Field, geophysicist and chairman of the research group, the Working Group on California Earthquake Probabilities for 2007.
